Creating a Magnificent Soundtrack

Bruno Bélanger, François Guay, Catherine Bazin, Danielle Poirier
Several professional musicians were invited to gather in a downtown Montreal studio. Each type was broken down into psychological constructs so they could recreate an atmosphere that would accurately portray the effect of a function on an individual, using relevant musical concepts.
For example, if extraverted sensing has the effect of being physically active and engaged in the environment, the music should have similar impact: to make the listener get up and danse.
It was not a question of illustrating what kind of music each type might listens to, but rather to interpret the type's relationship to his/her environment, time, and space with music. Is it a structured experience or not, discontinuous or continuous, physical or intellectual, synchronised or asynchronous?
We first established, with the insightful expertise of Catherine Bazin, the artistic director, what musical qualities best captured each theoretical concept - for example, since sensing relates to the body (extraverted with the musculature, introverted with the organs), it was linked with percussions, to timing and rhythm. Because perception is an irrational (haphazard) kind of function, percussions for the dominant sensing types are syncopated or discontinuous.
